As teams seek to be fruitful, leaders are often confronted by the challenge of time (i.e., along with other limited resources), meaning (i.e., ensuring that members of the team can identify and feel like they're contributing to something of value), and direction (i.e., being able to choose which way to go, make decisions, and choose what not to do). Creating purpose and focus—especially with clarity and challenge—is critical in addressing these challenges and fruitfully contributing towards mission. In this module, we consider a framework to discern, communicate, and measure purpose.

Module Overview

As teams seek to be fruitful, leaders are often confronted by the challenge of time (i.e., along with other limited resources), meaning (i.e., ensuring that members of the team can identify and feel like they're contributing to something of value), and direction (i.e., being able to choose which way to go, make decisions, and choose what not to do). Creating purpose and focus—especially with clarity and challenge—is critical in addressing these challenges and fruitfully contributing towards mission. In this module, we consider a framework to discern, communicate, and measure purpose.

Core Components in this Module

  1. Prework: There are some pre-workshop reflection questions + a leadership conversation podcast to listen to.
  2. Workshop: The workshop focuses on: (a) DISCERNING Purpose; (b) COMMUNICATING Purpose; (c) MEASURING Purpose.
  3. Homework: (a) Complete the Worksheet; (b) Review with other leaders and key members of your team. You will need to identify opportunities for putting your purpose into action.

Also in this Module

  • Going Deeper: If you would like to go deeper on this topic, some additional resources are provided including books, videos, and articles.

PREWORK

To prepare for the workshop, please take the following two steps.

Step 1: Think about:

  1. What do you think is the purpose of your team?
  2. How well do you think your team members know and share that purpose?

Step 2: Listen to the Leadership.Local Conversation with Jo Knight (it's only 20 minutes). You can also access it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Jo is CEO of Anglican Overseas Aid.

Here are four key takeaways from the conversation:

  1. If we’re clear on the horizon, then the steps to get there fall into place.
  2. Maintaining purpose will sometimes involve slowing down.
  3. When your resources are tight, but you have clear strategy, you become really creative with what you’ve got.
  4. Leading values-driven people, there’s so many good things you can do… it’s critical to be able to take that energy and and direct it into what the strategic direction of what the organisation has been called to do.
