Module Overview

Keith Webb defines coaching as "an ongoing intentional conversation that empowers a person or group to fully live out God's calling". Whilst not all of us are involved in formal coaching arrangements, every conversation we have is an opportunity to express a coaching habit. This workshop focuses on (a) why coaching is important, (b) relevant coaching models, and (c) key coaching questions that we can utilise as leaders.

Core Components in this Module

  1. Prework: There are some pre-workshop reflection questions + a leadership conversation podcast to listen to.
  2. Workshop: The workshop focuses on: (a) the PURPOSE of coaching; (b) different coaching MODELS; (c) a PATTERN of coaching to integrate into leadership practice.
  3. Homework: A) Test out some coaching methodology; and B) In teams, explore if any of this coaching methodology could shape some of your regular rhythms of how you work together.

PREWORK

To prepare for the workshop, please take the following two steps.

Step 1: Think about who has most helped you grow as a leader (on whatever frontline that you choose)? What did they do that was particularly helpful?

Step 2: Listen to the Leadership.Local Conversation with Peter Mayrick (it's only 15 minutes). You can also access it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Peter is an expert in coaching and leads an organisation called 'Partners in Ministry'.

Here are five key takeaways from the conversation:

  1. Coaching helps leaders go from 'Point A' to 'Point B'.
  2. Always coach the person and then the task.
  3. Every coaching conversation should be mindful of both truth and grace.
  4. There’s usually a reason why someone may not have done something well and only one of those reasons is because ‘they can’t be bothered’ (and that's generally not the case).
  5. There’s a stance (compassionate discipleship) and a skill (listening and understanding) to bring to every coaching conversation.
