WARM-UP

  1. Have you ever had a radical, life changing experience?

READ Mark 9:2-8

  1. Throughout the bible, what is the significance of mountains?
  2. What does it mean that Jesus was transfigured? How is human language something of a limiter when we read passages like this?
  3. Read Psalm 104:1-2. What does light represent? Why is it significant that Jesus radiates light in the transfiguration?
  4. Jesus is 100% human and 100% God. What is being revealed or unveiled slightly here? How does this shape the way that we relate to Jesus or view Jesus?
  5. Who are Moses and Elijah and what do they represent? How is Jesus the fulfilment of the expectations of the Israelites?
  6. How is Jesus the cornerstone of our faith? What would happen to our faith if Jesus wasn’t in the picture? What does this suggest about the significance of who we say Jesus is?
  7. What is behind Peter’s response in V5? What should be the response of us when we see or encounter the glory of Jesus?
  8. What does the cloud represent in V7? Read Mark 1:11. What is similar and what is different about the words spoken in chapter 1 and those in our passage today?
  9. As you have grown as a disciple, how has your perspective or view of Jesus changed? Is there ever a point at which we have ‘made it’ as a Christian?
  10. In V8, the disciples only saw Jesus. How and why should our life be all about Jesus?

READ Mark 9:9-13

  1. Why were the disciples told to tell no one about this event?
  2. What did Jesus mean about the ‘rising from the dead’? What may have the disciples thought it meant? Why must Jesus suffer much and be rejected?
  3. What does it mean for you that Jesus in all his glory submitted himself to this?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the greatness, majesty, power, holiness, and glory of Jesus. Thank you that he came on earth in human flesh so that he may live the perfect life, die the death that we deserve, and rise again defeating death. Expand our vision, broaden our horizons to see Jesus for who he is and give us boldness and courage to tell others about him. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
