Questions and going deeper resources

Small group questions

CONNECT:  How can you excel more in generosity?

WARM-UP  Question

  1. What do you find easy and/or difficult about serving?
  2. How is serving at church so much more than just filling a roster?

READ Romans 12:1-2

  1. Why is the ‘therefore’ so important in this passage?
  2. It’s probably impossible to summarise the whole of Romans 1-11 but what are the mercies that Paul is talking about?
  3. What does it mean to be a ‘living sacrifice’? What parts of our lives does this affect?
  4. We are urged by Paul not to conform to the patterns of this world. Why so? What does this look like in practice?
  5. What’s the difference between ‘be transformed’ and ‘transform yourself’?
  6. Why does serving begin with a full devotion to God?

READ Romans 12:3-8

  1. How do you think some people of the world think of themselves? How should we think of ourselves? Why is it dangerous to have a too high or too low view of ourselves?
  2. Can you think of any practical examples of when you have seen the body of Christ at work and it’s worked really well? What about when it’s worked very poorly?
  3. We receive so many blessings through our union with Christ. When we are united with Christ, what do we become a part of? What does it mean to belong to each other?
  4. What is a gift? What are the dangers of finding our identity in our gifts rather than in Christ?
  5. Is this list in verses 6-8 meant to be a comprehensive list of gifts? What then are we meant to take from these verses? How should this shape the way we serve?
  6. Is there something that has stood out for you in this series on ‘Life Together’? How has this shaped your view of how we Gather, Grow, Give, and Serve?

APPLY: How can you more intentionally serve as part of the body of Christ?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, words cannot describe how thankful we are for your many mercies given to us. Thank you so much for how you love us and have rescued us. Help us to live our whole lives in service to you and each other and help us as we serve to do so with joy and with diligence for the building up of your church. Keep us from finding our worth in our gifts but to find our worth in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
