The Gospel of Mark is repeatedly punctuated by questions Jesus asked. Jesus poses questions to everyone! In only sixteen chapters, Mark records over forty questions posed by Jesus. Questions for the religious elite, everyday people, enquirers to the faith, demons, those who seek healing, the disciples, and even his Father in heaven. Yet, his ministry begins not with a question, but with a call—a command—to follow. In many ways, all of Jesus’ questions point to the call on our life which he commands. Jesus’ questions are not intellectual ‘thought experiments’ nor self-development exercises. Jesus’ questions are intended to provoke a response to him and his good news.
