Warm-Up

  1. How have you witnessed fruitful outcomes from using your time or talents for God?
  2. Has defiant resolve, naive optimism, reckless abandonment, or blind ignorance ever led you to make an unwise investment in time, talent, or treasure?

Read Jeremiah 32:1-8The Purchase…God’s Idea

  1. Where are we up to in Jeremiah? What has happened so far?
  2. Whose idea was it to purchase the field? Why might Jeremiah have been hesitant to purchase it?
Are there any clues to suggest that Jeremiah was hesitant?
  3. Why is it so important to recognise that this purchase was God’s idea?
  4. Who was the ultimate owner of the field? What does God call us to invest for his purposes?
  5. Has God ever guided you to do something which seemed risky by worldly standards?

Read Jeremiah 32:9-15; 36-44The Purchase…Points to a Guaranteed Future

  1. Why were there two copies of the deed? Why was one kept in long-term storage?
  2. What was the long-term future that was promised by God? What was different about this future?
  3. Verses 16 to 35 provide a whirlwind history of God’s people. How does Jeremiah’s prayer remind us of both: (a) the Lord’s power; and (b) our need for him?
  4. What is the long-term future that we look forward to? How has that been secured & guaranteed by God?
  5. How do you think the purchase of the land would have been a reminder of God’s promises to the generations yet to come? How do you think our acts of generous faithfulness can point others to real hope?

Read Hebrews 11:1-2The Purchase…Invites a Faithful Response

  1. How does Jeremiah engage in God’s promises through obedience and prayer? How do you think we participate in God’s promises through the same?
  2. How should our confidence in what God will do shape how we live our lives today?
  3. During this series, has any part of Jeremiah stood out or been particularly relevant to you as a disciple?
(A list of the topics is printed overpage if you need a refresher!)
