CONNECT: What is one way that you could be shrewd for the Gospel this week?
WARM-UP Question
- Have you ever been in a boat or out walking and slowly got off course? What went wrong?
READ Hebrews 1:1-4
- What are the seven different aspects of who Jesus is according to these verses? Which of these do you think you should prioritise growing in your appreciation of? How could you go about doing that?
- How do these verses demonstrate the uniqueness and definitiveness of God speaking through Jesus? What helps you regularly to plumb the depths of Jesus’ greatness?
- If someone said to you that they would believe in God if they heard him speaking, how would you encourage them of the certainty of what God has said to us in Jesus? Is anyone more needed?
- Do you think your view of Jesus is too small? How can you deepen in your appreciation of how phenomenal Jesus is both as an individual and also in the context of our community?
READ Hebrews 1:5-14
- Why might the author of the letter have felt it necessary to demonstrate the superiority of Jesus to angels? What were the various ways in which Jesus is superior?
- Why do you think some people today still have an exaggerated view of angels? What is their role?
- Are you ever in danger of treating something (or someone) as superior to Jesus? What is it and why?
READ Hebrews 2:1-4
- Why do you think drifting is so dangerous? What does drifting most commonly look like?
- Do you think that we are ever in danger of drifting away from Jesus? What do you think tends to cause us to drift away from Jesus? What helps us to hold firm?
- Have you known anyone who appeared to drift away from Jesus? How would you know if you were?
- Do you think you are currently growing closer to Jesus? What can keep you more on course?
APPLY: Write a prayer to thank God for revealing himself in Jesus, detailing all of the phenomenal ways that come to mind in which Jesus is great.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank and praise you that you have spoken to us comprehensively through your Son. Please help us to grow in our appreciation of the greatness of Jesus that our lives would be saturated with opportunities to pay careful attention to all we have heard. Please show us any areas of our lives in which we may be drifting away, that we would instead set our eyes on you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
