WARM-UP  Question

  1. Can you think of some ways when old is better? What about when new is better?

READ Hebrews 8:1-6

  1. What is the significance of Jesus sitting down at the right hand of God?
  2. In the days of the old covenant, what was the role and what was so significant about the tabernacle? What is the superior tabernacle and why is it important that Jesus serves there?
  3. How is this news reassuring and encouraging for us today?
  4. If Jesus stayed on earth, why would he not be a priest? Where did the priests of Moses’ day serve and what did they do there?
  5. Read V6. Why is the author saying that Jesus’ ministry is superior? What is the basis of this superiority?

READ Hebrews 8:7-13

  1. Why was there a need for a new covenant?
  2. This section is a quote from Jeremiah 31. What was the context that Jeremiah was prophesying in?
  3. V9 says that God’s people did not remain faithful to the covenant. In what ways did they not remain faithful? Are we ever at risk of not being faithful? Why/Why not?
  4. What does it mean that God will put his law in our minds and write them on our hearts? How is this different to memorising the law? What is the role of the Spirit in this?
  5. Sometimes we can be either too optimistic or too pessimistic about our personal sanctification. What do these verses teach us about our ability to live like Jesus? How can you remind yourselves about this?
  6. How is the knowledge of God described in V11 different to just knowing things about God?
  7. Why is the forgiveness of sins fundamental to the new covenant?
  8. What are some promises that the world seems to offer? How is the new covenant of God superior in each of these cases?

APPLY: Practically, how can you remind yourself of the promises of the New Covenant?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for your graciousness, mercy, and forgiveness given to us in the new covenant. Help us to build our trust in them day by day, that we may live to please you and be faithful to the covenant. We ask all this in the name of our superior priest Jesus. Amen.
