CONNECT: Who can you share the good news of Jesus’ return with in 2019 and how can you help them to grow closer to him?

WARM-UP  Questions

  1. When it comes to the idea of us being involved in disciple making, what do you find most challenging?
  2. What are the common ‘lords’ that we’re tempted to adopt in our lives in Australia?

READ Colossians 1:15-18

  1. How does (or should) confessing the “Jesus is Lord” displace all other lords in our life? 
  2. What was the danger for the Colossians in confessing Jesus is Lord? Are there any dangers to us?
  3. What are the various ways in which Paul asserts that Jesus is supreme? 
  4. What do you think it means for Jesus to be both the sustainer and goal of all created things?
  5. How is Jesus supreme in both creation and new creation? Where does the church sit amidst that?
  6. When you think about the extent and breadth of Jesus’ supremacy, which aspect most challenges you?
  7. Why were some in the Colossian church struggling to recognise that Jesus could be God? Why do you think people today struggle to acknowledge that Jesus is God?
  8. Do you believe that Jesus is Lord? Do you recognise his Lordship as extensively as described in this section of Colossians? Why or why not?
  9. If Jesus is not just to be #1 in our lives, but #1 in every part of our lives, what aspects of your life do you most struggle in letting Jesus rule? What parts of your life have you made the most progress in?
  10. Do you ever want to hide compartments of your life from the Lord Jesus? Why does that make little sense and why is it actually not good for us to do so?

READ Colossians 1:19-20

  1.  In what ways is Jesus’ Lordship sufficient? Why is it important to have a Lord who is sufficient?
  2.  What fundamental problem does Jesus’ death on the cross address for us?
  3. Why is the claim ‘Jesus is Lord’ effective for salvation? Why is this claim at the heart of evangelism?
  4. In what way is the claim, “Jesus is Lord”, the most succinct summary of our faith and the Good News? Why is it the absolute foundation for what it means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly?

APPLY This Week: What area of your life do you need to recognise Jesus as Lord more?

Dear Lord, thank you that you are the supreme Lord of the universe who ever was, is, and will be! Thank you that we can follow you, and be saved because of your sufficiency. Please help us to recognise your authority in every part of our lives, and proclaim this news to the world. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
