Memory Verse - Philippians 2:4

None of you should look out just for your own good. Each of you should also look out for the good of others.

Talking Together, Stretch: Our Part in God's Story, Week 1

Welcome to 2017! Happy new year! Today on this week of the year we start a brand new series thinking about Our part in God's story.  This week, the first topic is Our devotion.

Have you ever felt truly devoted to anything?

When someone says they are a devoted fan or a devoted follower, what kind of characteristics would you expect from that person?

To think about this in Sunday School, we looked at Acts 2:42-47.

Verse 42 says:

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

This week we continue our series God With Us.  Have you ever had to pack quickly? Have you ever had to get somewhere as quickly as you could?

In this week, we see God keeping the new King and his family safe.

I wonder what things you would pack, if you had to leave quickly.

God's plan remains unchanged. He still made a way for people to be in his family again.

Talking Together, Forgotten letters series, 3 John

This week we continue our series looking at some of the lesser known letters in the Bible. John's second letter, 3 John. This letter is written to a man called Gaius, and is written to encourage him in his walk with Jesus. He commends his for his generosity, warns him of an unhelpful and dangerous person in the church, then seeks to encourage Gaius to imitate Jesus. Some key verses:

Verse 4 - I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are living by the truth.

Verse 11 - Dear friend, don’t be like those who do evil. Be like those who do good. Anyone who does what is good belongs to God. Anyone who does what is evil hasn’t really seen or known God.

We do good as a response of knowing God, and is wonderful grace to us!

Talking Together, Forgotten letters series, 2 John

This week we continue our series looking at some of the lesser known letters in the Bible. John's second letter, 2 John. One of the key themes in this book is love. How do we walk in love, in a way Jesus would be happy with? And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

Forgiveness is a key part to this letter, as two people think about how their lives will be affected, and how they both need to live out forgiveness. The key verse this week is Philemon 4 - 6. 'I always thank my God when I remember you in my prayers. That’s because I hear about your love for all God’s people. I also hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that what we share by believing will help you understand even more. Then you will completely understand every good thing we share by believing in Christ.'

This week is family week. We are focusing on 'Belonging to God's Family'. To help understand this story, we are looking at the popular story from the Gospel of Luke, the Prodigal Son. (Luke 15:11 - 32) This is a story of love and forgiveness, for someone who really made poor decisions, and came back begging to work for the family, rather than to be part of the family.
